After blissful laziness on the beach and recuperation after the journey, the time has come for active sightseeing. The first point of the trip was the most famous statue of Jesus Christ – Christ the Redeemer.
A concrete monument 38 m high, built on the Corcovado mountain – it overlooks the entire city and the place provides amazing views.
The next point of the trip was the most recognizable stadium in the world – Maracana (official name is Estádio Jornalista Mário Filho). Formerly the largest stadium in the world that could hold about 200,000. fans. Currently, after modernization and for safety reasons, it can accommodate about 80,000 fans.
After the stadium, it’s time for the next point of the trip – the Cathedral of St. Sebastian (Catedral Metropolitana de São Sebastião). It is very characteristic due to its structure – the shape resembles a cone or a pyramid. The building is 80 meters high and can accommodate 20,000 worshipers, of which 5,000 of it has seating. There are four beautiful stained-glass windows inside.
The next point on the map of Rio was the famous, colourful Selaron Staircase (Escadaria Selarón), which is located in the centre of the old city. The stairs consist of 215 steps with a total length of 125 m. For their construction, the artist used over 2,000. tiles from over 60 countries. The whole thing makes an amazing impression.
The last point of the first day of sightseeing was Sugarloaf Mountain. It is a hill rising from the coast of the Atlantic Ocean above Guanabara Bay to a height of 396 m. The summit is reached by a panoramic cable car with one transfer station, from which there is a fabulous panorama of the entire Rio.
