Cyprus – Limassol

I have been planning my holidays in Cyprus for a long time. Many years passed when I finally managed to land on the island of Aphrodite. I had a lot of expectations and a lot of things I wanted to see. What did I finally see, how life verified my plans and is it really worth going to Cyprus?

I invite you for a holiday on an island where the sun shines here for over 300 days a year.

I spent a week in Cyprus, it was an organized trip from a travel agency. My hotel was in the small town of Agios on the outskirts of Limassol.

Limassol

Limassol is the second largest city in Cyprus and one of the largest seaside resorts on the Cyprus tourist map. The city is a combination of modernity and history. It is a beautiful seaside promenade, numerous historical monuments and countless restaurants. The city can be easily explored on foot, most attractions are close to each other.

Promenade

The promenade is primarily a showcase of the city and its greatest attraction. The whole is 17 km long, partly consists of wooden elements, the rest is concrete. There are countless palm trees planted along the promenade, there are also many parks, benches, various types of monuments and cafés. The promenade is a great place for a walk along the sea, and an ideal place to relax after exploring the city.

Old port and marina

Walking along the promenade towards the city, we will reach the old part of the port, which is no longer active (it has been moved a bit further) and the marina – where yachts are moored. The marina is a great place to take a break while exploring. There are many cafés and restaurants with a beautiful view of the sea.

Limassol Castle

Near the port, there is one of the city’s greatest attractions, namely the Castle. The main purpose of the castle in the old days was to defend against invasions of hostile troops. The whole history of the castle is quite interesting; it was owned by different countries and was rebuilt several times. Currently, inside it is the Medieval Museum of Cyprus.

Old Town

East of the Castle, we will reach the Old Town. There are no big plaza’s or squares here. We can only take a walk through the narrow streets, admire the beautiful buildings, among which there are numerous cafés, restaurants and shops where we can feel the atmosphere of the city.

Ayia Napa Cathedral

Being in the oldest part of the city, it is worth spending a few moments on the Ayia Napa Cathedral. It is a relatively young building from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. The name Ayia simply means holy. It is worth paying attention to the interesting architecture of the entire building.

For those interested, there are several museums in Limassol and its vicinity:  Limassol Archaeological Museum and Amathus.
